Bold, Rare, and Rooted

When William H. Macy and Woody Creek Distillers released their exclusive bottled-in-bond bourbon, they tapped Kissane Viola Design (KVD) to create packaging that felt as rare and memorable as the spirit itself. We designed a matte black box with layered copper foil and black gloss coatings that give the surface a dimensional, sculpted feel—elevated, tactile, and quietly bold. Subtle illustrations of Macy’s banjo and topographic lines drawn from the real contours of Woody Creek, Colorado, ground the design in character and place.

Opening the box reveals a surprise: a full-color image of Macy standing in the waters of Woody Creek, bringing the brand’s humor and authenticity to the surface. It’s a nod to the purity of the source water and the unfiltered personality behind the product—a bourbon that takes craft seriously, but never itself.

More than packaging, this is a collector’s experience. Every detail—from the textured finish to the photo reveal—was designed to reflect the spirit’s origin, story, and wit. For KVD, it was a chance to build a brand that’s as layered and memorable as the bourbon inside.
